Clinging to God's Promises

Psalm 119:145-152

I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.
—Psalm 27:13-14

—

Patty’s overwhelming anxiety woke her up in the middle of the night. Her oldest son, Jonathan, was spiraling deeper into rebellion and addiction. Lifting her heart in desperate prayer, she felt God bring to her mind the concluding verses of Psalm 27. God revealed to her that he had goodness to give to her son, but she would have to be strong and wait to see it.

Like the psalm writer who said, “My eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promises,” Patty clung to this word of the Lord as his promise to her. It was her lifeline to grasp during her family’s climb out of this slippery pit of addiction. She found security in God’s faithfulness to fulfill his word.

It was a long wait. And it took work, attending family nights weekly for eighteen months at the Christian rehabilitation center. Then there was the time that Jonathan nearly died. But God said his goodness would be displayed in “the land of the living,” and Patty had to trust that he was in God’s hands.

Today Jonathan loves the Lord who has saved him. He leads his family with strength and spends time sharing God’s goodness with other strugglers.

What promise is God inviting you to claim?

Lord, every promise you make is a “yes” in Christ. We believe you will fulfill your promises of salvation, and we praise you for your faithfulness. Show us your goodness now and forever. Amen.
