A Dead Child Raised to Life

Luke 8:40-42, 49-56

He ... said, "My child, get up!" Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Luke 8:54-55

—

Jairus the synagogue ruler had a 12-year-old daughter who was dying. So he pleaded urgently with Jesus to come to his house and heal her.

Jesus responded immediately, setting out for the house where the child lay. Along the way, they were interrupted by a sick woman who had touched Jesus' cloak and was suddenly healed. It took some time for this woman to identify herself and talk with Jesus, and in the meantime Jairus's daughter died.

Jesus said to the heartbroken father, "Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed." So they continued on toward the house. The father's only hope rested on Jesus and his word.

At the house, mourners were wailing loudly. The death of a child can be heart-wrenching. For 12 years this little girl had brought much joy to her parents. Jesus shocked the mourners, however, by telling them, "Stop wailing... She is not dead but asleep." Then Jesus took the child by the hand and said, "My child, get up!" And at once she rose.

Today in this world of tears and suffering we still trust Jesus, who said to the girl's father as they walked together, "Don't be afraid; just believe."

Someday all of God's children will hear Jesus say, "My child, get up!" And they will!

Lord, we've seen your power, and we trust your word. Thank you for the promise that the dead in Christ will rise and enjoy eternal life with you. For Jesus' sake, Amen.
