Completely Saved!

Hebrews 7:23-28

He is able to save completely those who come to God through him. Hebrews 7:25

—

From time to time I get involved in some construction jobs. One thing I enjoy about them is that at the end of the day you can see that you've finished something. Working with people or with bigger, more complex projects doesn't often go that way. Our students move on, our children move out, and our annual plans simply find new targets to shoot for. When Tammy and I moved away from church planting work in Leyte, the work there was certainly not all finished.

Experiences like these can sometimes burden us with regrets or tire us with "the tyranny of the unfinished." But we must remember that the completion of the work of God's kingdom is not finally our responsibility. We are called to do only a portion of the work. We are coworkers, and the building or the field belongs to God.

The writer of Hebrews reminds us there is only One who can guarantee that the whole task will be completed. Whether we're concerned with social injustice or a character weakness in ourselves, the "Completer" is the same. Jesus is the One who "is able to save completely." We tire and retire, but Jesus "always lives to intercede" until the last enemy is defeated.

So work with all your might at the kingdom task God has given you, but at the end of the day rest in the knowledge that Jesus will see it is finished.

Dear Jesus, thank you for always interceding for us. Thank you that today we can rest, knowing you will finish your kingdom for us. In your name we pray. Amen.
