Knowing God (1)

Jeremiah 31:31-34

"They will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the LORD. Jeremiah 31:34

—

One of our receptionists was upset when she came to work one day. She had just gotten married, and her husband's work schedule had changed to the evening shift. "We'll only see each other on weekends," she shared with a heavy heart. "He's going to look for another job."

That's understandable. How can newlyweds get to know each other if they can't spend time together? When spouses drift apart, you begin to hear comments like "It's as if I don't even know you anymore!" Knowing your spouse means much more than having intellectual information. To know each other is to experience a deep, intimate relationship with each other.

God's relationship with his people is similar. In fact, God often refers to it in the Bible as a marriage relationship. God invites his bride to get to know him, to grow strong and faithful in her relationship with him, to draw closer to him.

For the next several days we're going to look into what it means to know God. Today's text speaks of a glorious day when everyone from the least to the greatest will know the Lord. How will God pull that off in the grand drama of redemption history? (Read verses 33-34 again.) How about you? Do you really know God? It's the most important relationship you can ever have.

Dear God, I want to be a part of the people who know you with all their heart. As we worship you today, please strengthen our relationship with you as never before. Amen.
