The Unfathomable Love of God

Ephesians 3:14-21

Great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
Psalm 57:10

—

My wife and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary at the Grand Canyon, often called one of the great wonders of the natural world. It was breathtaking to stand at the edge and look straight down into the canyon; it’s almost a mile deep. I was also struck with awe by its size: more than 190 miles long and 10 miles wide.

It was then that I really appreciated what Paul was saying when he said he prayed that the Christians at Ephesus—and we who believe in Jesus today—would be able “to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge.”

I think Paul was using all the possible adjectives he could think of, all the dimensions he knew, in order to give us a glimpse of the love of God.

Could we with ink the ocean fill,
and were the skies of parchment made;
were every stalk on earth a quill,
and every man a scribe by trade;
to write the love of God above
would drain the ocean dry;
nor could the scroll contain the whole,
though stretched from sky to sky.

If you know Jesus, the Son of God who became man to die for my sins and yours, you surely agree.

Thank you, Lord, for your amazing, immeasurable love. Help us to remember it, celebrate it, and pass it along to others each day. May we worship and serve you in all we do. Amen.
