True Hero

Romans 5:6-11

God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8

—

“Do we still have heroes today?”

That was the introductory remark by a reporter telling the story of Wesley Autrey on a newscast. Wesley had been standing with his two daughters on the platform at the 137th Street subway station in New York City. Suddenly he saw a young man, Cameron Hollopeter, start to have a seizure and fall onto the tracks. The train was coming quickly, and without hesitation, Wesley jumped onto the track and used his body to cover Cameron until the train passed by over them. Neither Wesley nor Cameron were hurt.

After this incident, Autrey immediately became the hero and talk of the town. He was interviewed by radio and TV networks, invited to vacation at Disney World, and so on. But Autrey said again and again, “It ain’t about being a hero; I just tried to do the right thing.”

Autrey risked his life to save one man; our Lord Jesus actually gave up his life to save all humanity. The Bible never describes Jesus as a hero; rather, he is called the silent sacrificial lamb (Isaiah 53).

A true hero will sacrifice for others; a true hero will not boast about himself. Jesus died for us while we were still rebelling against him and living in sin. That makes him the ultimate superhero! Is Jesus your hero? More important, is he your Savior too?

Thank you, Jesus, for sacrificing your life for us. Help us to live a life that is worthy of the price you paid to save us. Help us depend on your strength each day to live for you. Amen.
