The Witness of Scripture
Scripture Reading — Acts 8:26-40
Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.
—Acts 8:35
A young dad was exhausted from waking up regularly with his son who was having nightmares. The dad wasn’t a Christian, but desperation drove him to try anything. Years earlier someone had given them a children’s Bible storybook. He pulled out the book with his son before bed. Together they read the first few stories, about creation, temptation, the flood, and God’s care of the animals.
The next morning the parents woke refreshed and surprised that their son hadn’t cried during the night. They asked him if he had dreamt, and he said, “Oh, yes, good dreams.”
“What about?” they wondered.
“Rainbows,” replied the boy.
What surprised them most was that the children’s storybook had described God’s care of the people and animals in the ark but hadn’t said or shown anything about a rainbow (see Genesis 9:12-17). In that holy moment they realized their need to know this powerful God of the Bible.
Do you have stories about God working in remarkable ways? How has some part of Scripture spoken to you? Philip was directed by the Holy Spirit to explain the good news about Jesus, and the Ethiopian man gained salvation. The same can be said as we come alongside people with God’s Word. It may be as simple as giving someone a Bible. Let’s pray for opportunities to give the gift of God’s Word!
Triune God, your Word is powerful and active. Guide many to know you through the witness of your Word today. Amen.
