Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever.
—Psalm 136:1
What is your story about coming to faith in God? For me, it includes a crisis of faith that hit me in high school. I tried to comprehend eternity, but my mind just couldn’t grasp it. My mind hit another wall when I learned about Philo, the first-century Jewish philosopher who described God’s creative work as “out of nothing.” How could something come from nothing? How did everything come from nothing?
That marked God’s breakthrough to me: either you must believe that everything has existed in some form forever and ever, or you must believe that it all came from nothing. There are no other options. And either one takes faith to believe.
Hebrews 11:3 says, “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” Psalm 136 reminds us similarly that we can praise God for his creation and everlasting love.
The Bible invites us to trust in a personal God, not an impersonal force. The God who set the universe in motion is also the God who will love us forever. Does that take faith to believe? Yes. Are there other options that don’t require faith? Not really. So let’s trust in God, who is good and whose “love endures forever.”
Why not share with someone a part of your story of faith in God today?
Everlasting God, I praise you for all you have created. Reveal yourself to me, so that my faith can be confident and my praise everlasting. Amen.
