Our April theme for the Today devotionals is “The Education of Moses,” written by Pastor David Den Haan.
When I was in seminary, I took many courses where I learned doctrine and theory. But I also received practical education. I studied with wise professors and had internships with experienced pastors and church staff. Both kinds of learning were important to my overall education.
Maybe you have an 8th grade education, or maybe you are a college graduate, or maybe you’ve apprenticed for years. Whatever your education, it prepared you for what you were going to do later in life. Whether it is learning to read or taking an advanced engineering course—it’s all preparation for what is to come.
The book of Exodus introduces us to Moses as an infant, where he learned from his mother. Then he lived in the house of the Pharaoh. After some difficult times in the land of Egypt, he spent 40 years in the wilderness.
Whether it was formal education in Pharaoh’s palace or practical learning in the wilderness, Moses underwent intense preparation for his tasks ahead, that of leading the children of Israel out of slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land. And God was his teacher.
Pastor Den Haan will help us walk alongside Moses as he learns many practical lessons about what it means to be a servant of God. And we’ll reflect on some fascinating lessons in Jesus’ life and in the life of God’s people as we are reminded again how much God loves us.
David Den Haan pastors a church in Jenison, Michigan. He has written previous Today devotionals with varying topics like the church, Advent and Christmas, and sitting at Jesus’ feet to learn from him.
May you be refreshed, refocused, and renewed in God’s Word this month.
