Devotions are a powerful practice in the life of a believer. They help us focus our minds and hearts on God and his Word. But with all the devotional content online and in print, how do you choose a topic that's right for you? Here are a few helpful tips.

Think about it

What season of life are you in? Are there things in your life that you are struggling with or questions you have about this stage of your faith journey? Whether it’s a graduation, marriage, job change, birth of a child, or the loss of a loved one, there are devotions available for most transitions and seasons of life. Think about what’s been on your heart and mind lately and begin to search for devotional topics that resonate with you.

Pray about it

Maybe your next topic of study isn’t obvious to you. If this is the case, seek out the Lord in prayer. Ask what he might want to teach you next. Or pray that he would make clear an area in your faith where you need to grow. Read the Bible and see if there are any books or themes you’d like to study more deeply. Ask the Lord to give you wisdom in this choice.

Today is a daily devotional that helps God's people refresh, refocus and renew their faith through Bible reading, reflection, and prayer.

Research it

If you still haven’t chosen a topic, simply do some research. Look up authors you’ve enjoyed in the past, or ask a friend for a recommendation. You might even consider joining a book study or a small group at your church that works through devotions together.

No matter what topic you choose, devotions are a great way to center your daily life around God. Remember the words God spoke through Jeremiah: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13).
