Jesus in John: Who God Is

Maybe—like many other people—you’ve been filling some “stay at home” hours with reading. What’s the point of reading a book? Maybe you read it to be better informed on a particular subject. Perhaps you read it so that you can be entertained. Or maybe you’re motivated by good grades; you read a book to complete school assignments. Your answer to that question probably depends on the book.

In the biblical book of John, we learn a lot about who Jesus is and why he came. We find out that Jesus is more than a teacher and more than a prophet. To ensure that we understand the point of reading his book, John tells us why he wrote it (and why we should read it!): “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31).

Many of the stories about Jesus in John help us better understand who God is and how he feels about us. The main thing is that full life with God is not about something we do to try to earn God’s favor or make up for our sin. Instead, it’s all about receiving the gifts of forgiveness and new life, made possible in Jesus.
