Our January theme for the Today devotions, written by Beth Fellinger, is “Jesus on Main Street.”
What does the main street in your town or city look like? What kinds of buildings are located on that street? Are they storefronts? Homes? Businesses? If you were to walk down the street, who would you meet?
The answers to these questions are probably as varied as our readers. Some main streets are quiet, tree-lined sanctuaries. Others are hustling, busy thoroughfares with many traffic lights and crowded sidewalks. Some wind through residential areas where people walk their dogs, push their children in strollers, or just take a leisurely stroll. Others have storefronts of many varieties as well as a plethora of people using those stores. Some of the people on these streets have a purpose in being there—they’re headed to a job or a store or to their car. Others wander aimlessly, seemingly just filling the time. Some are well dressed and affluent. Others seem to live in poverty. There are as many descriptions as there are streets.
Beth Fellinger, our author for the month of January, follows Jesus as he journeys through the cities and villages of his day. She writes, “Many stories in the Bible take place as Jesus walks along a road or down a street. That’s often where he encounters people and teaches lessons that still apply to us today.”
If Jesus were to walk down Main Street in your city or town today, who and what would he find? There are people who need to meet him there, people who are called to serve, and those who need to be served. Let’s walk alongside him today, and learn from him, as we explore the topic, “Jesus on Main Street.”
Beth Fellinger is the pastor of Destination Church in St. Thomas, Ontario. She and her husband have worked together in a variety of churches, large and small. Beth believes strongly in the local church and what a church committed to Christ, missions, and its community can accomplish. She has an enthusiastic vision of how the church can reach out and share the good news of Jesus with others.
As you read the Today devotionals this month, may you be refreshed, refocused, and renewed in God’s Word!
