Every Christian has dual citizenship, living in this world yet looking forward to our eternal home.
Jesus teaches that his followers are in the world but not of the world (John 17:13-19). As believers in Christ, we have been rescued from the dominion of darkness and brought into the kingdom of light, the kingdom of God. We live in a world where corruption, greed, and selfishness abound—and yet we are part of God’s family and are citizens of God’s kingdom.
So let’s explore together what it means to live as the people of God’s kingdom today—here and now. And let’s reflect on the call “to act justly and to love mercy as we walk humbly with [our] God” (Micah 6:8). May we grow closer to the Lord each day as he calls us to live faithfully in this world.
This month’s author, George Koopmans, has served as an ecumenical chaplain at Medicine Hat College in Medicine Hat, Alberta, since November 2021. Prior to entering into chaplaincy, he served as a pastor to two congregations—one in Minnesota (Luverne), and the other in Medicine Hat. George and his wife, Emily, have three grandchildren. Hiking, biking, and birdwatching are his favorite hobbies.
As you read the Today devotions this month, may you be refreshed, refocused, and renewed in God’s Word!
