Remembering in Deuteronomy

The concept of “remembering” in the Bible is rich and multifaceted.

January’s author, Denise Posie, recently grew interested in the theme of “remembering” in the Bible, which led her to the book of Deuteronomy. She says that Deuteronomy is now one of her favorite Old Testament books. She notices that God is surprisingly great, present, and intentional in the story of his love for his people as he prepares to bring them into the land he has promised them.

Deuteronomy emphasizes God’s covenant promises and law (including the Ten Commandments), the people’s history and witness to other nations, and more. According to pastor and author Tim Keller, God desired for other nations to see God’s people and say, “What a glorious God they have!”

Similarly, God’s Son, Jesus, prayed that all who believe in him “may be one,” reflecting the unity of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, “so that the world may believe” Jesus came to bring them God’s salvation and full life in his kingdom (John 17:20-21). Through Deuteronomy, we can learn important life lessons about being God’s witnesses in a broken world today.

Denise Posie served as a pastor in an urban church in Kalamazoo, Michigan, for thirteen years. She also served the Christian Reformed Church in North America as a congregational consultant and as director of leadership diversity. Since retiring in 2020, she has served part-time at Calvin Theological Seminary as a pastor in redemptive kingdom diversity. In her spare time, she enjoys writing and meeting new people.

As you read the Today devotions this month, may you be refreshed, refocused, and renewed in God’s Word!
