In Those Days

Luke 2:1-7

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree …
Luke 2:1

—

“In those days” Caesar Augustus ruled an empire that stretched from Egypt in the south to Germany in the north and from Spain in the west to Syria in the east.

In those days the Han dynasty in China ruled vast expanses for hundreds of years from the Pacific Ocean to central Asia.

In those days the Olmec civilization dominated the Yucatan peninsula in what is now known as Central America, forming the foundation for the powerful Mayan civilization that would arise from it.

In those days the mighty kingdom of Aksum in Ethiopia controlled the Persian Gulf and the lucrative trade route between the Roman Empire and India.

In those days the Son of God emptied himself of his glory and took on the “very nature of a servant” (Philippians 2:7). He went from being mightier than all other empires and kingdoms to being a tiny baby in the arms of a young woman in a cave outside Bethlehem. In those days “the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14).

In those days the angels announced Jesus’ birth, the people of Bethlehem were amazed, and Mary “treasured up all these things … in her heart” (Luke 2:19).

And now, in these days, we rejoice because of all that God has done. Come, let us adore him!

Glory to you in the highest, O God! And on earth bring peace among all on whom your favor rests. We love you, Lord; help us to love as you have loved. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
