There is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people.
—1 Timothy 2:5-6
As an elementary school student, I was fascinated with the southern hemisphere, the part of the earth that is south of the equator. Looking at the school globe, I couldn’t understand how people there could walk “upside down.” And then I couldn’t believe that their coldest months came when we had summer.
Many of our readers are enjoying the warm summer weather this month. But for people in the southern hemisphere it’s winter, the coldest part of the year. To be honest with you, I still find this fact intriguing.
But I’m much more fascinated with the fact that people who live in such vastly different lands and cultures can all find salvation in Jesus Christ and in him only.
The triune God of the Bible is not some tribal deity; he is God for all human beings. And Jesus is the only mediator between the heavenly Father and the whole human race.
Of course, people in different cultures and religious traditions have some knowledge of God through his general revelation in nature. But only in Jesus can we find our way to the heavenly Father.
Our reading today is more than an encouragement to pray for everyone in the world. It’s a welcome for everyone to find peace with God in the person of Jesus Christ.
Jesus, you are our one and only way to heaven. Give us courage and wisdom to proclaim your salvation to every-one on earth. Amen.
See God's love, power, presence, and purpose in your life every day!
