Still Wrecking

Matthew 6:25-34

"Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?" Matthew 6:27

—

The other day I read a story about NASCAR driver Mark Martin and a multicar wreck he was in. Several race cars had started to spin out of control. Some had collided with each other, and others had hit the wall. Smoke from skidding tires filled the air and made visibility almost impossible. The whole thing happened right in front of Martin, and he too started spinning out of control. His crew chief radioed him and asked, "Mark, did you get through it?" Martin immediately responded through a microphone in his helmet, "Can't talk now, still wrecking." (In the end, his car was a little banged up, but he was okay.)

How often don't we feel a bit like that? If someone asks how we're doing, we might feel like saying, "I don't know yet; I'm still wrecking." Maybe we're in a financial crisis, or dealing with a problem at work, or trying to sort out a mess in our marriage or family. At such times, when our lives seem to be spinning out of control, it's easy to be filled with fear and anxiety.

That's why Jesus' words in our reading for today are so comforting. He points out that if God watches over even the birds of the air and the flowers of the field, he will certainly watch over us. So let's not worry, even when it might feel as if we are "still wrecking." God has his eye on us and will watch over us.

Father in heaven, forgive me when I'm filled with worry and doubt. Remind me of your constant care and protection in my life, even when problems persist. In Jesus, Amen.
