"The LORD has chosen you to stand before him and serve him ..." 2 Chronicles 29:11
I read about a retired man who plays at least four rounds of golf every day, all day. He starts before the sun rises, and he plays past sunset--every day. He seems like a nice guy, and I wish him well.
It's just that, well, here at church, our Sunday school needs teachers. Our mentoring program needs mentors. Our prayer team is looking for pray-ers. Our senior high students need youth group leaders. And some lonely older people need visitors. Missionaries need financial supporters. Poor people need clothes. Hurricane survivors need homes. Hell-bound people need to know about Jesus.
Hezekiah's words force us to weigh all our frivolous busyness, our selfish pursuits, and our deadly sins against the call of God to be active in his world, on his behalf. It may not be easy, it may not be fun, and it probably won't be glorious--but can you hear God speaking? "My son, my daughter," he says (do you hear the affection?), "do not be negligent now, for the LORD has chosen you to stand before him and serve him..."
Of course, we are given opportunities to have fun and enjoy recreation. Yet Hezekiah conveys a call from the Lord that is urgent and strong. The start of a new year is an excellent time to review your life. Are you chasing a little white ball, or living in the light of God's call?
Father, keep my eye on the call. Help me to see how you want me to serve, and to fulfill your will in the roles and tasks you have given me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See God's love, power, presence, and purpose in your life every day!
