Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put three shelters …”
Luke 9:33
Luke’s editorial words placed after our verse for today—that Peter “did not know what he was saying”— fit this disciple well. Peter speaks for those of us who regularly do the same. Something looks great to us, and without realizing the consequences we make a ridiculous suggestion or observation.
Peter’s idea probably seemed reasonable to him. He wanted to capture the richness of their time together: Moses and Elijah—representing the law and the prophets—meeting with Jesus. He saw something of Jesus’ glory and didn’t want to leave. Peter, James, and John were privileged to share this uplifting experience. They even heard the voice of God!
God also gives us moments that reveal a sense of his glory. In those moments it’s as if we hear God say, “See what I’m doing!” It may be an ocean sunset or a snow-laden evergreen. It may be the wispy smile of someone we love or the hug of a grandchild. These are moments to be savored. They’re all the richer when shared with someone we love.
Peter and John went on to become influential leaders in the church. Their time with Jesus was an experience they shared. Our sharing of inspiring times with each other strengthens us for the tasks that lie ahead. We need to leave room in our lives for them to take place.
Father, thank you for letting us know of your love for your Son. Help us savor the moments you give that encourage us to live for Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.
See God's love, power, presence, and purpose in your life every day!
