7 Devotions About Prayer

By Christopher Hunt

May 15, 2025

Prayer is about growing closer to God by communicating with him, acknowledging our dependence on him, and listening to his voice. When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he said they didn’t need any special words or invocation but could simply address their “heavenly Father” with humility, reverence, and confidence (Matthew 6:5-15). He urged his disciples, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation” (Matthew 26:41). Therefore, prayer is also about receiving God’s power through the Holy Spirit to activate discernment and resist sin. The Holy Spirit empowers our prayers so that they may bear good fruit. We can’t pray hard enough or long enough to compel God to do anything or to gain his favor, but God does bless us as we grow in our spiritual disciplines, including our commitment to prayer.

The seven devotions below delve into the amazing blessing and privilege that prayer provides for us. We pray these devotions encourage you as you seek God in prayer.

Fervent, Unceasing Prayer

When our hearts are troubled and seeking God’s grace on behalf of our churches, families, coworkers, partners, and other hurting or lost souls, we pray.

A Disciple's Prayer

In the midst of his suffering, Stephen prays. The link between Stephen and Jesus is clear and dynamic.

A Passionate Prayer

Reflecting on Jesus’ prayer in John 17, we see that we have a mission as believers—and we will accomplish it only by remaining in him who is the vine (John 15:5).

The Posture of Prayer

There are many appropriate physical positions for prayer, and none are necessarily right or wrong. What really matters in prayer is the posture of our hearts.

The Lord’s Prayer

God is not some remote figure who must be awakened or impressed. There are no magic words, no secret formula to memorize to get God’s attention.

Reaching Out with Prayer

Our calling—our mission—starts with prayer. Many believers are often surprised that people who don’t seem to be religious will often welcome prayer if they are asked.

Does God Answer Prayer?

Does God answer prayer? Of course, he does. God promises to give what we ask for when we ask in line with his will for our lives and for his world.

Lord, Teach Us to Pray

When we pray, we acknowledge our total dependence on God as our heavenly Father, our thanksgiving to God, and our call to love and serve God in all areas of our lives. This series of devotions looks at prayer in general and the Lord’s Prayer in particular.

Prayer: Heart to Heart with God

Prayer consists of a genuine encounter between us and God—one that God graciously initiates. God our Father earnestly desires that we communicate with him. This devotional series explores the importance of prayer in the lives of Christians.
