‘Comfort, Comfort My People’

Where do you find comfort?

The words of Isaiah 40, inspired by the Holy Spirit, were written for the comfort of God's people. In this chapter, the prophet Isaiah addresses a range of relevant topics for today, including God’s strength, our frailty, and the wisdom of trusting in God. In all these truths, Isaiah speaks words of comfort.

In our present day, we also need comfort. There is so much perplexity and anguish in the world around us, often marked by blatant injustice and atrocious suffering. And the comfort we need comes not from people or institutions but only from God.

May the majesty and the loving care of God remind us that although we are weak, God is strong. Although we are sinners, God is forgiving. Although we are needy, God is powerful to supply, in Christ Jesus, all that we need.

This month’s author, Hernandes Dias Lopes, is the Portuguese ministry leader for ReFrame Ministries. He also serves as director of Luz Para o Caminho (“Light for the Way”), an organization formed in partnership between ReFrame and the Presbyterian Church of Brazil. Rev. Lopes travels around the world to preach and teach the Bible. He and his wife, Udemilta (Tinha), live in São Paulo, Brazil, and have two children.

As you read the Today devotions this month, may you be refreshed, refocused, and renewed in God’s Word!
