Our True Identity

What determines who you are?

Since ancient times, people have wondered about their identity and purpose: “Who am I?” and “Why am I here?” Deep within, we long to grasp our true essence. Often, we try to find significance in the opinions of others or our own achievements.

We aim for “bigger and better” things—money, power, status, luxury, security, and more. But all of that is like chasing the wind. The ideals of this world are fleeting. They last only for a while and are soon gone.

As believers in God, who has given us the Bible, we find that our true identity is rooted in the Lord, our Creator, who calls us to live for him. Even more, God sent his Son, Jesus Christ, who has shown us how to live and has reconciled us with God through his finished work on the cross. Jesus came to save us from the curse of sin and death in this world, giving us eternal life so that we can live in God’s presence forever. This month, let’s explore and discover who God declares us to be.

This month’s author, Rev. Daniel Jongsma, is a retired CRC pastor who lives in Nashville, Tennessee. As a minister of the Word, he shepherded congregations in Elmhurst and Fulton, Illinois; Dearborn and Kalamazoo, Michigan; and Nashville. Dan has also served as a church planter in the Chicago area. He and his wife, Gloria, have three adult daughters and four grandchildren.

As you read the Today devotions this month, may you be refreshed, refocused, and renewed in God’s Word!
