Today is celebrating 75 years of helping God’s people refresh, refocus, and renew their faith! Starting as a print booklet called The Family Altar and expanding to web, email, and social media, Today reaches hundreds of thousands of readers across the globe. Today is thankful to have served as God’s invitation for people to slow down and take time each day to focus on his Word for the last 75 years (and we hope to continue for 75 more!). We have an amazing team of authors, editors, staff, and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to place Today in the hands of our readers. We also want to recognize and thank our readers—those who have been reading Today for years and years, and those who are just starting their journey with Today.
We recently surveyed our readers and asked about their favorite devotional series, and we wanted to share a top ten list with you!* We pray that these series may continue to refresh, refocus, and renew your faith.
"Real Riches" by David Feddes, May 2006: What are the “real riches” in life? Understand the wealth of blessings available through a relationship with Christ, and take guidance from Scripture on how we can use our blessings to honor God.
"Lessons from Ezra and Nehemiah" by Reginald Smith, January 2014: Though Ezra was a priest and Nehemiah was a community builder, their goal was the same: to help an exiled people rediscover the God who put them there and learn his lessons for a better future. The stories of Ezra and Nehemiah offer valuable insights and lessons that we can apply to our lives today.
"Trees in Scripture" by Julia Prins Vanderveen, April 2021: Many major characters and events throughout the Bible have trees associated with them. Leaf through the pages of Scripture to ponder how trees connect to many experiences and promises in our lives with God, and grow in awareness of God’s vast love and how we can share it by bearing good fruit.
"Songs of Christmas" by Brian Kuyer, December 2021: During the holiday season, we hear Christmas songs everywhere. But what do they really mean? Dive into a month of focus on songs for Advent, Christmas, and the New Year, and reflect on the scriptural message behind each song.
"God with Us" by Joe Huizenga, December 2023: You are invited to enter into a community on Chicago’s South Side—to meet some of the people there, listen to their stories, and witness where God’s Spirit is at work in one corner of creation. Slow down and reflect on how the love of God in Jesus Christ is being reflected in your own neighborhoods and communities.
"God’s Answers for Life’s Challenges" by Darrell Delaney, April 2024: How does the Bible address life’s practical challenges? Scripture tells us that God cares about us and can comfort, encourage, strengthen, and uplift us in every situation.
"Describing God" by Ben McKnight, November 2024: The Bible provides a wonderful variety of ways to describe God, including a defender, advocate, shepherd, master, friend, and loving parent. Reflect on these various descriptions of God and find deep comfort in the fact that only God can fill all of those roles for us.
"The Shepherd Still Leads Us" by Lesli van Milligen, July 2025: Psalm 23 is one of the most widely known passages in the Bible. Dive deeper into this familiar psalm by exploring what it means that the Lord is our shepherd and that we are his sheep.
"Peter the Apostle" by Kurt Selles, August 2025: As one of Jesus’ closest disciples, Peter is a major figure in the New Testament. Through studying Peter’s questions, bold actions, and weaknesses, we learn that Jesus loves us in both our victories and defeats.
"Among All People" by Kevin DeRaaf, September 2025: As Christ-followers, we are part of a story bigger than our own lives, and even the lives of our families and church communities. Explore what it means to be part of the global church, and reflect on how we can honor God by declaring with our lives his greatness and the wonder of salvation.
